Recognizing Bias
If you notice the following, the source may be biased:
- Heavily opinionated or one-sided
- Relies on unsupported or unsubstantiated claims
- Presents highly selected facts that lean to a certain outcome
- Pretends to present facts but offers only opinion
- Uses extreme or inappropriate language
How can I lead without Bias?
- Be honest with yourself
- Show that you care
- Treat co-workers how you would want to be treated in your workspace
- Don't judge co-workers based on positions or lifestyle
- Don't tolerate racism from your employees
- Maintain expectations
- Take testing seriously
- Treat your problem employee as a “star pupil”
Implicit biases are influenced by experiences, although these attitudes may not be the result of direct personal experience. Cultural conditioning, media portrayals, and upbringing can all contribute to the implicit associations that people form about the members of other social groups.
