Staying Safe

WHEN THE CYCLONE STRIKES
 
There is usually sufficient warning given before a cyclone so that affected residents can be evacuated. What happens if you cannot evacuate? You should hide in the smallest room in the home – that might be the laundry or the bathroom and try to cover yourself with a mattress or something that provides some cushioning.
  1. Disconnect all electrical appliances. Listen to your battery radio for updates.
  2. Stay inside and shelter (well clear of windows) in the strongest part of the building.
  3. If the building starts to break up, protect yourself with mattresses, rugs or blankets.
  4. Beware of the calm 'eye'.

Additionally,

  • Listen to the radio or TV for information.
  • Secure your home.
  • Turn off utilities if instructed to do so.
  • Move to the evacuation center if it is safe to move.
  • If you are unable to evacuate, go to your safe room.
  • Stay indoors during the hurricane and away from windows and glass doors.
  • Close all interior doors—secure and brace external doors.
  • Take shelter in a small interior room, closet, or hallway on the lowest level.
  • Lie on the floor under a table or another sturdy object.
