Fall Hazards
Falls from elevation are a leading cause of injuries and fatalities in the construction industry, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). In 2020, falls accounted for 351 out of 1,008 construction worker deaths. These statistics highlight the critical importance of recognizing and mitigating fall hazards on construction sites.
Understanding Fall Hazards:
Falls can occur from a variety of situations on a construction site. Here are some common fall hazards to be aware of:
- Unguarded Edges: Open edges on roofs, walking surfaces, or unfinished floors pose a significant fall risk. A worker could lose their balance and fall if they step too close or misjudge the distance.
- Ladders: Improper use of ladders is a frequent cause of falls. This can include using the wrong type of ladder for the job, exceeding the weight capacity, or failing to secure the ladder properly.
- Scaffolding: Scaffolding collapses can lead to serious or fatal falls. Inadequate construction, overloading the platform, or failing to follow proper assembly procedures can all contribute to scaffolding accidents.
- Floor and Roof Openings: Holes in floors or roofs for elevator shafts, stairwells, or utility access create fall hazards if not properly covered or guarded. Workers could unknowingly step into an opening and fall through.
- Fragile Surfaces: Walking on skylights, prefabricated concrete slabs, or other fragile surfaces poses a risk of falls if the surface breaks or gives way.

Applying Fall Hazard Awareness on the Job Site:

- Conduct Pre-Task Inspections: Before starting work in a new area, identify potential fall hazards and ensure proper fall protection measures are in place.
- Use Guardrails and Fall Protection Systems: Always use guardrails, safety nets, or personal fall arrest systems (PFAS) as mandated by OSHA regulations (typically when working 6 feet or more above a lower level).
- Practice Safe Ladder Use: Select the right ladder for the job, ensure it's properly secured and in good condition, and maintain three points of contact (two hands and a foot) while climbing or descending.
- Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Pay close attention to your surroundings, especially when working near edges, openings, or changes in elevation.
- Report Unsafe Conditions: If you observe unsafe work practices or damaged fall protection equipment, immediately report these concerns to your supervisor.
